Joe Hart would captain England if call comes

Joe Hart admits he is flattered to be linked with the England captaincy following the decision to take the armband off John Terry for a second time.

Hart, 24, is a candidate to lead Fabio Capello’s side into Euro 2012 this summer because the Manchester City goalkeeper is one of the few players who appear to be guaranteed a place.

With Rio Ferdinand or Steven Gerrard far from certain to be in the starting line-up, the door is open for Capello to choose a new captain and Hart would be unlikely to turn down the opportunity.

‘Would you?’ he said. ‘I’m flattered to be linked with it.

‘As long as I’m playing I don’t care who’s captain. I think there’s a long way to go. I’ve got a really important season,  games for Man City and hopefully a couple for England coming up. That’s all I’m concentrating on at the moment.

‘But I think anyone who’s having a consistent run in the England side is being linked with it. There are a lot stronger candidates than myself.’

Hart kept another clean sheet in the snow as City cruised to a 3-0 win over Fulham to cement their place at the top of the Barclays Premier League.
